The United States of America and Russia may be extending their aggressive counts into Africa and Sudan may be the testing ground. This becomes an issue of concern as the US warns Sudan of serious consequences if it allows the establishment of a Russian military base on the Red Sea coast. This warning was given by the US ambassador to Sudan, Mr. John Godfrey, in an interview with the Tayyar newspaper, El Tayar daily newspaper on 28 September, 2022, in Sudan. In the interview the Ambassador said: “there are some reports that Russia is trying to implement the agreement it signed with ousted President Omar al-Bashir in 2017 to establish a military base along the Red Sea.” He added: “All countries have a sovereign right to decide which other countries to partner with, but these choices have consequences, of course.” Godfrey pushed further to warn Sudan that such move will lead to isolation of the country from the international community and lead to serious deprivations.
Expressing the account of involvement in AA ANADOLU AGENCY publication, it was reported that in November 2017, President Bashir, the former leader of Sudan who was overthrown in a military coup in 2019, visited Russia and signed “cooperation agreements on military training, experience sharing and entering of warships into the ports of the two countries.” And in line with that Russian President Vladimir Putin had on November 20, 2020 approved the establishment of Russian naval base in Sudan. This naval base is capable of taking in nuclear-powered vessels.
In a clarification that intended to cloud the situation the more the Sudanese Army Chief of Staff, Lt. General Mohamed Osman Al-Hussein said: “there is no full agreement with Russia on the establishment of a naval base in the Red Sea, but our military cooperation has been extended.” But this was made more porous when Russian media on December 9, 2020, published the statement of the agreement between Russia and Sudan which primarily involve maintenance of a naval military base “to support peace and security in the region.”
The US government is insisting on supporting Sudan to sustain a flourishing democracy in the country and would not take to see a Russian military base in the country. How far these intrigues will go will unfold in time to come. For now Africa needs peace and not incursions.
