MUST POLITICS BE DIRTY?

This is a bewildering question; one we must answer.

First, and in the context of expectations, politics is a management system.  This is the direction of this walk. Coming home, politics is an important part of our society; essentially it begins from the family because it is required to keep order and it’s helpful in attending to matters of development and management generally.

Politics places attention on ethical standards, it is expected to keep rules of attendance that support transparency and accountability.

Politics must not be dirty; in the world today, the Catholic Church instructs Catholics to participate in political process, and remain informed voters. The elected officials are encouraged to work, serve and act on behalf of the common good of the people. The fabrics of politics are to serve as the apron of the common good.

Politics becomes dirty when it’s no longer centered on the common good, when it is immersed in the pool of contending interests, and selfish manipulations, and when injustice takes a prevailing position.

And yet there are good politicians, they exist, and exist among us. They are the ones who share the position of Dwight Eisenhower, “politics ought to be the part-time profession of every citizen who would protect the rights and privileges of free men.” These politicians exist and can be identified.

In Nigeria, the most denigrating content of politics is violence that shelters insecurity, they contribute to make it dirty. They are employed and engaged to destroy the good yields of politics.

Violence and insecurity rob politics of people’s growth and development, they turn lives into wastes that breed deadly social monsters. Violence and insecurity in their wildness and wilderness shield terror and all vices against the values of truth.

Those who promote violence, promote anarchy and in turn disrupt governance, nothing good comes from violence.

When properties that serve the common good are destroyed, the worth is taken from the common good to replace the properties. When lives are destroyed, the loss to the people is permanent and regrettable.
